Homemade Fabric Softening Spray

Everyone loves a warm, fresh-smelling pile of clean clothes, but sometimes the products we use in our laundry contain unnecessary chemicals and additives. This natural fabric softener DIY uses the power of vinegar and essential oils to give your clothes a crisp, clean scent using just two ingredients.

First, vinegar acts as a natural softening agent by dissolving hard water buildup without leaving residue behind. And don’t worry—although this ingredient has a strong scent of its own, you won’t even notice it once your clothes have dried.

You can choose any number of essential oils to add to this recipe depending on your preferred aroma. Lemon, Grapefruit, and Peppermint are great options if you’re looking for an invigorating boost, but here we have listed Lavender and Geranium oils due to their soothing, conditioning properties. Whatever you decide to use, your clothes will come out feeling softer and smelling nicer.

Ingredients
16 ounces white vinegar
10–15 drops Lavender or Geranium oil

Instructions

  1. Add essential oils to a glass spray bottle.
  2. Fill the remaining space with warm white vinegar.
  3. Shake well before each use to ensure oils and vinegar are well combined.
  4. To use, spray over wet clothing before drying.

Bergamot – Citrus bergamia

Calming and energizing, uplifts mood, promotes self-acceptance and self-worth.

Bergamot is the most delicate of the citrus plants, requiring special climate and soil in order to thrive. Italians have used Bergamot for years to reduce feelings of stress and to soothe and rejuvenate skin. In Greece, the unripe fruits are used as sweetmeats, eaten by the spoonful as a dessert or with coffee. Bergamot is unique among citrus oils due to its ability to be both uplifting and calming, making it ideal to help with anxious and sad feelings. It is also purifying and cleansing for the skin while having a calming effect.

Recommended Ideal Amounts

Dr. David K. Hill, D.C. shared these recommendations at the 2015 doTERRA Convention. To create these recommendations he balanced effective ranges of essential oils with known safety data. It is important that essential oil users stay within the Ideal Amount ranges to derive the maximum benefit from using the essential oils. In fact, overwhelming the body with too much essential oil can sometimes lead to unwanted outcomes. This is because cells in the body utilize complex chemical reactions to metabolize the oils. It is never appropriate to exceed the metabolic capacity of the cells. Learn more about metabolism in this article: “Essential Oil Metabolism.” Continue reading How much is too much?

End the Carrageenan Controversy

There have been many naysayers on the Internet when it comes to carrageenan, including some well-known health bloggers. I wanted to put the controversy to an end when it comes to the products I recommend. I had an extended discussion with Jeff Dorsett, MSHS, Research and Development Scientist at doTERRA. I expressed my concern over the fact that some products in the doTERRA lines have carrageenan listed as an ingredient, notably the On Guard toothpaste and all of the softgel preparations. What I found out is that Jeff is the man who wrote the white paper on carrageenan at doTERRA and he graciously offered it to help me clear the air on this misunderstood compound used in food and health products.

What is Carrageenan?
“Carrageenan is a safe and natural fiber extracted from seaweed. It is an indigestible polysaccharide that is commonly used in foods as a natural thickening, gelling, and stabilizing agent.” [1] Continue reading End the Carrageenan Controversy
